GENERAL KNIFE CARE & FAQ

Stainless Steel

Take extreme care of your new Humble Blade! You made a choice for durability in stainless steel, but be forewarned - Stainless Steel is high is corrosion resistance but does not mean it will not stain, tarnish, or rust. A good way to think about it is that a stainless steel knife will take longer to react to its environment. Dry after use, wash with soapy water, dry the blade with a towel and be careful of the edge DO NOT PUT IN DISHWASHER.

Carbon Steel

High Carbon Knives are prone to corrosion, pitting, rust, etc. They will react to their environment much quicker than their stainless counter parts, it’s important to dry after use and avoid storage in damp places. . Over time it will develop a patina, this is ok, if not desirable. After enough use the patina will develop its own character and age with the knife, however you must take extreme care of it. DO NOT PUT IN DISHWASHER.

WOOD & HANDLE CARE

Store is a cool, dry, place. Oil sparingly. The knife will get dirty of time and with use. You can use a scotch brite pad or some 1000+ grit sandpaper, some coating oil to bring some life back into the wood. Micartas and synthetics don’t need to be oiled as frequently but a little drink will help snap it back to its original splendor.

EDGE CARE

Proper edge care is extremely important as it will affect the performance of your Humble Blade. There are many systems and solutions out there from wet stones, to automatic belt sharpeners for home and hobby use. There are different opinions about the best edge so it’s best to make a decision on how you will maintain your edge and then stick to that plan. An ideal angle range is 14-17 degrees. Regardless, it’s better to maintain the geometry that is in place that resetting and correcting often. It is better to often hone the edge with a steel or ceramic rod before each use than to sharpen frequently. When you sharpen, no matter the method, you remove material and affect the geometry of the blade. Over time the shift change in geometry may become noticeable in the performance of the blade.
